Founder's Letter #2: Why Even Bother?
This letter contains mention of death, COVID-19, and other touchy topics that may need a content warning. If you feel uncomfortable with those topics, this letter, unfortunately, is not for you.
2020 has not been a vibe. We all, up until January of 2020, were so excited for this year. Not only was it an aesthetic year to look at on paper (I mean come on, it's vertically symmetrical!), but many goals were centered around our newfound "20/20 vision": the idea that 2020 would be the perfect year for everyone. It was going to be an election year, and the Class of 2020, having just finished applying for colleges, would now be able to relax and slide through the rest of this year.
Then came January of 2020. COVID-19 has hit us all like a brick and there doesn't seem to be a chance of going back to living a life like we did before the pandemic hit. Many families were affected, and when my mom said that she was an essential worker, I finally understood how germaphobia affects the human brain.
Now, all this isn't to say that I've had it the worst. I know I haven't, and that scares me. I know that there are so many other people and so many other families that COVID-19 has torn through in frightening ways. Even though I tried my hardest to embrace the lockdown and all the restrictions to travel, after a month, I wanted out. I wanted to stop hearing the news of deaths in my area, not because I wanted to be ignorant but because I just wanted people to stop dying.
December's theme is "The Hope Within Us"
I want to end the year with a little bit of light. I know that much of the time, I (and maybe you as well) read or listen to creations that have darker undertones. I don't want to make this year any darker than it has already been, hence why, the theme for December is based on hope.
It's been scientifically proven that creativity decreases as negative emotions increase to a degree, and that makes sense. I know from personal experience that I can't create anything while I'm upset about something that just happened. I can only write or talk about it the day after. That's why we all need hope and light during this time of festivities.
That's why we want you to show us the hope within you.
Monthly Updates
Oh boy has this month been busy! Well, here's all the new stuff we have:
1. New Podcast: Creative Minds
Yep, it's finally here! Astral Cognition is proud to present its very own podcast: Creative Minds! On there, we dive into what it means to be creative and what the creative journey looks like for everyone!
We are a student-run page dedicated to teaching everyone how to become a divergent thinker and a creator! Our goal is to help people who don’t have a voice to find one on the internet.
As a result, it’s important that everyone has a voice! We believe that, on the internet, creativity is one of the key ways to make sure your opinions are heard! Join us while we explore different aspects of creative minds every Tuesday & Thursday!
We also are accepting applications for Guest Hosts! If you'd like to be a part of our podcast, just fill out the Request Form!
2. Discord Server
I use Discord a ton, especially now that I can't talk to people in person. Discord is basically like a chat group and it's an extremely fun way to connect with others and build a community, and Astral Cognition has its own server! It's been so much fun getting to interact with all of you, and I really hope to engage with y'all more soon!
Join us while we play games, talk about our problems, and chill with each other!
