Lightyears

When you look up at the night sky,

to see things as they are,

you don’t notice single constellations

or even single stars.

You notice them all,

individually unified across the sky they fill,

peppering the picture

like snowflakes on a windowsill.

We are like stars,

shining brilliant and bright,

like stars in the impact,

the reach of our light.

But we are also like stars

when it comes to the heart:

it seems we are close

while we are lightyears apart.
