Postcards From Down the Street
I remember her:
the girl who melted her own heart
and poured it into the contents of a bookshelf,
a girl who always put more trust
into everyone else
rather than herself,
you were a girl so desperate to hear the words "I love you"
that you said them over and over
hoping someday they would boomerang back to you,
hoping they will boomerang back
and tie up the frayed ends of your own self-image;
imagine
for a moment,
if you didn’t feel like you had to say
"I love you,
I love you,
I love you"
over and over again
because the only time you could hear those words
would be in the echoes of your own voice,
and even then,
they wouldn't be true,
because
you
don't
love
you.
Someday, maybe,
but until then,
I will continue to bring you mac n cheese
and coloring books with pastel pencils,
because I know you like the way they look.
I will send you text messages
reminding you I have your back,
and I will make you playlists
with your favorite songs
for the perfect soundtrack;
I will personally call Mother Nature
and ask her to paint you rainbows
because you like the way the colors ombre
and I will call her every morning
to ask for golden sunrises
and soft rain.
I will hand-craft you a mirror
that paints you in perfect light
and every night
I will write you postcard letters
full of positivity and promises.
I will pour my heart into them,
so much so
that my words will barely fit
and I will press love into each postage stamp
before sticking it.
I will tell you everything,
and every word I write will be true
and I will sign each one
with the words
“I love you.”
